49ers Find New Kicker, Sign Phil Dawson

The San Francisco 49ers have found their new kicker.

The team, who parted ways with kicker David Akers earlier this month, reportedly signed Phil Dawson earlier today.

The 49ers haven’t made an official announcement about their new kicker but Dawson confirmed the news on Twitter.

Dawson wrote: “I am humbled & thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career with my new team, the SF 49ers!”

Dawson, who has played the last 14 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, also thanked his loyal Browns fans.

The 49ers new kicker wrote on Twitter: “Hey, Cleveland. Thank you for a tremendous ride. Your love, support & encouragement have blessed me deeply. Playing for you has been one of the great joys of my life, and I wish you all the best.”

Dawson may be an NFL veteran but he’s still at the top of his game. He made the Pro Bowl last year after hitting a career high 93.5 percent of his field goals (29 for 31). According to NFL.com, Dawson has only missed one out of 15 field goals over 50 yards in the last two seasons.

Dawson started his NFL career with the Browns in 1999 and has played in Cleveland ever since he was drafted. Over the course of his career, he’s hit 84% of his field goals and has a career long of 56 yards.

The 49ers struggled last year in the kicking department when reliable David Akers failed to live up to expectations. Akers only hit 69% of his field goal attempts in 2012.
