The Wachowskis’ ‘Jupiter Ascending’ Gets July 2014 Lift Off

Wachowski siblings, Lana and Andy’s upcoming sci-fi dystopia Jupiter Ascending has just been given its release date of July 25, 2014.

Slap bang in the middle of the summer blockbuster season, Warner Bros. will no doubt be hoping that those moviegoers who went in droves to see The Matrix Trilogy but didn’t stump up for the much anticipated Cloud Atlas that grossed just $121 million worldwide, still believe in the Wachowski brand.

In May Vulture unveiled details about Jupiter Ascending’s plot:

“The first entry in a trilogy, centers on an unlikely heroine: A recent Russian immigrant — played by actual Ukrainian immigrant Mila Kunis — who is busily scrubbing toilets for a living. Unbeknownst to her, she actually possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to her otherwise immortal rule. A bounty hunter of the evolved-being type is dispatched to dispose of the Cleaning Lady with the Great Pair of Nucloetides, but, as you’d expect with a Matrix re-dux, they fall in love.”

It’s been noted elsewhere that July is a typically high stakes release period for Warner Bros. In their respective years The Dark Knight Rises came out July 20, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 onJuly 15, The Dark Knight on July 18, and Inception on July 16.

Come summer 2014, other films vying for box office will include Bryan Singer and Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past on July 18, Brett Ratner’s Hercules, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic Park IV, and other possibles.

Kunis’ co-stars include Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean, Douglas Booth, and Tuppence Middleton. Jupiter Ascending is expected to be the first of a trilogy and released in 3D. Here’s hoping it doesspectacularbusinessforWarner Bros., the Wachowskis, and audiences.
