Megacon 2013 Features Anime, Cosplay, And Star Trek ‘Next Generation’ Crew

Orlando, FL – Megacon 2013 is a convention in Orlando that features anime, comics, and everything else a nerd might desire. This year’s Megacon is featuring the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Megacon originally started in 1993 with the intention of bringing together SciFi, fantasy, gaming, anime, and comic book fans. They also do not call this convention “mega” without a reason. Megacon has regularly attracted stars like Stan Lee, William Shatner, and Leonard Nimoy. Last year, this writer even ran into some of the stars of the Harry Potter movies, although no one seemed to recognize Tom Felton who played Draco Malfoy.

Much of the Megacon convention is taken up by vendors selling posters, comics, movies, props, and miscellaneous nerd favorites. For example, Assassin’s Creed fans could purchase a full leather outfit for Ezio Auditore. The edges of the convention area usually feature special activities like remote controlled R2-D2s from Star Wars. Then there are special rooms for contests, talks, and the end of the night features a rave.

For Star Wars and Star Trek fans, cast members in attendance for Megacon this year will include: Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker), Brent Spiner (Data), Levar Burton (Geordi), Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi), Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher), John De Lancie (Q), and everybody’s favorite Klingon warrior, Michael Dorn (Lt. Worf). David Prowse (Darth Vader) and Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett) will be there, too.

There’s a Megacon Next Generation spectacular at 6:30 p.m. Saturday when all the stars gather. That event costs at least $45 in addition to the MegaCon ticket.

But what most people remember about Megacon is the cosplay costumes. Fans everywhere converge while wearing elaborate, often hand made, costumes. For example, this year this writer is going as the human form of Alphonse Elric since I’m waaaay too tall to be Edward. My wife is going as Winry Rockbell. The kicker is that my wife is almost seven months pregnant and she’ll be wearing two signs that read: “Team Alphonse” and “Don’t Tell Edward…” Any fan of Full Metal Alchemist will get the joke.
