David O. Russell Chasing Oscar With December Release Date

Even though we’re just winding down from Oscar season it looks like Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell is poised to throw himself into a third campaign for the gold statue. Two years ago he hit the ground running with The Fighter, and this past year he had a great chance in grabbing the gold with Silver Linings Playbook.

Now it looks like with the announcement of his next film making a December release date that Russell will have a loaded schedule come Oscar season. The film which is untitled and previously known as American Bulls, sees Russell teaming up with now Academy Award winning Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Louis C.K.

The film’s short official synopsis via the Hollywood Reporter is as follows:

“The famous FBI sting operation that implicated a number of Capitol Hill lawmakers in a scheme exchanging money for political favors in the late 1970s and early ’80s.”

David O. Russell’s new film is said to hit theaters December 13 in a limited release, and then expand on Christmas Day against the new Jack Ryan film, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Of course a limited to an expanding release is a very typical procedure during award season. Usually studios take this approach to keep Oscar buzz growing throughout the season, which spans from October until January.

Of course it’s extremely early to predict what David O. Russell’s chances are for his new film, but a lot of early predictions have him in line with a few contenders, including Meryl Streep’s August: Osage County, The Way, Way Back, Sundance’s favorite Fruitvale, and the re-teaming of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street.

Do you think David O. Russell will be at the 2014 Oscars ceremony? How about Academy Award winning Best Actress Jennifer Lawrence? It’s unheard of for an actress to take it two years in a row, but what about a nomination? Let us know what you think.
