Google Memorial In China Shows How Deeply Rooted The Censorship Debate Has Become

If you haven’t been following along this week, Google has announced that they will no longer filter search results in China, after learning that Gmail accounts were being hacked to track groups that oppose the Chinese government. That lack of censorship could lead to Google’s demise in the country and now some citizens have started a memorial for North Americas largest search company.

While on the one hand it could be seen as a funny joke started by pranksters, we’ve been told some of the notes left on the Google company logo at one of their Chinese offices have congratulated Google for their new stance, while berating the Chinese government for their censorship laws.

The Chinese government has not yet announced whether Google.cn will be shut down or other restrictions will be placed on the company. Although given the huge size of the Chinese web user base, I’m leaning towards some type of compromise on the Google front. [SlipperyBrick]
