Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void Already In Production

Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm is due out on March 12 but Blizzard isn’t waiting to being work on an expansion pack called Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void. Game director Dustin Browser says that his company is already well into getting the story and missions put together for what would be a Protoss-focused expansion.

The Legacy of the Void expansion is expected to be the third and final expansion for this particular title. Browser recently took part in Reddit AMA in which he said that Blizzard has been conscious of wanting to get the new expansion out quicker than they have managed to so in the past.

Blizzard also likes to work on projects well in advance of their release. Reports indicate that most of the team that worked on Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm have already moved over to working on Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void.

Some of those artists have also been rerouted to work on another upcoming project, Blizzard Allstars. Online server issues have been an issue for almost every company that has worked with popular games in the Internet age.

Issues that have popped up with SimCity have made developers even more cautious when it comes to using their servers for online play. Blizzard can especially sympathize with Maxis and Electronic Arts because they had their own server issues when they launched Diablo III.

While work has begun, there is obviously not even the slightest hint for a release day just yet. Blizzard likes to get to work early, but they don’t always work that quickly. HotS actually had a playable build way back in 2005 and is finally coming live to your computer eight years later.

It obviously won’t take that long to get the next expansion up and running, but people should expect to be playing HotS only for a little while.
