Kate Winslet’s Divorce Made Her Stronger, She Explains

Kate Winslet’s divorce from Sam Mendes in 2010 is old news — the star remarried in an “intimate” ceremony last year — but she talked a bit about what the positive outcome of what is normally quite a devastating event has been for her.

Kate Winslet’s divorce was one of a few topics touched upon by the Oscar-winner (and biggest target of the recent Academy Awards ceremony’s poorly received “We Saw Your Boobs” number) in a recent interview, and it seems the thrice-married, twice-divorced actress has managed to contextualize the heartbreaks in a healthy way.

Winslet talked about divorce in the Harper’s Bazaar UK chat, saying of the marital setbacks and how she has grown as a person due to them:

“I’ve really learnt a great deal about myself, in the last four years in particular … I think I can see more clearly now — about how the pattern of past experiences has shaped who I am and the characters I have played — and I’m grateful for that.”

Winslet’s divorce from Mendes was her second after splitting from Jim Threapleton. The pair were married in 1998 and divorced in 2001. Of her latest split, Winslet muses:

“I have so much more material to draw on for work — rubble, bricks — and I know I can carry it now. I’m not going to drop it, and if I do, I’ll sift through it. Does that make any sense at all? Probably not.”

The star also says:

“I think I can see more clearly now—about how the pattern of past experiences has shaped who I am, and the characters I have played—and I’m grateful for that.”

Kate Winslet’s divorce was back in 2011, and the star re-tied the knot quietly to Ned Rocknroll in December of 2012 — in a ceremony so under wraps that even her parents were caught off-guard when it was revealed to be a wedding.
