Microsoft Acquires MetricsHub, Makes Service Free For Azure Customers

Microsoft has acquired cloud performance management service MetricsHub. The service, which was developed with the help of the Microsoft Azure Accelerator, helps customers operate their cloud services more efficiently.

Microsoft Azure is a three-month accelerator program that helps developers create innovative new products.

TechStars and Microsoft provide program participants with $20,000 in development money alongside $60,000 worth of Azure cloud computing. Accelerator participants also receive office space in Seattle.

Microsoft and MetricsHub have not revealed financial details for the acquisition.

Following the company’s acquisition announcement, Microsoft announced that Azure users can now use a “pre-release, no charge, version of MetricsHub’s Active Cloud Monitoring.”

Paying MetricsHub customers will also now be moved over to Microsoft’s free setup. At the time of acquisition, just 374 users were taking advantage of the MetricsHub system.

If you are unfamiliar with the MetricsHub platform, it is a software suite that allows users to scale their cloud computing needs up and down based on provided metrics. The system also provides performance monitoring and notifications when the developers server experiences problems.

In a release for the acquisition of Kelly, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for strategy and business development writes:

“Cloud solutions are compelling for a variety of reasons – scale, flexibility and value – particularly for companies looking to do more with less. However, it’s difficult to understand, monitor and correlate all the application data points that tell you how and when you need to scale your application.”

The service doesn’t offer all of the extra features given to users by service monitoring platform New Relic. While the service is scaled down, it is also free to use which will likely attract interest.

Will you be taking advantage of the free Microsoft MetricsHub platform on the Microsoft Azure service, or is New Relic still a better option despite its cost?
