Queen Leaves Hospital Early, Makes ‘Good Recovery’ From Stomach Bug [Video]

Queen Elizabeth has left the hospital. Despite Buckingham Palace’s previous statement that the Queen would stay in hospital for a couple of days, the British monarch exited the hospital earlier than expected after making a “good recovery” from a stomach bug.

The 86-year-old was admitted on Sunday after suffering symptoms of what was suspected to be gastroenteritis, but, in the end, the Queen spent less than 24 hours at the King Edward VII hospital in Marylebone, central London.

The great-grandmother, who will shortly be welcoming another when Prince William and Kate Middleton’s child is born, fell ill while she was at Windsor castle over the weekend. She was subsequently driven into London in a private car and admitted to hospital.

Reuters reports that the Queen left the hospital looking cheerful and refreshed as she thanked staff and shook hands with a nurse on the hospital steps.

Wearing a scarlet coat with a bow-shaped brooch, the smiling ruler got into a waiting Bentley and returned to Buckingham Palace — her official residence in London.

Typically, the treatment for gastroenteritis involves making sure a patient does not get dehydrated and would possibly have meant the Queen being given a drip-feed of fluids. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, and intermittent bouts of diarrhea.

After being forced to cancel her upcoming official engagements — which included a trip to Rome at the invitation of the Italian president, Giorgio Napolitano — the Queen will resume her duties next Monday with a day of commonwealth-related engagements, including a service at Westminster Abbey where she will address a 2,000-strong congregation, according to The Telegraph.

Buckingham Palace has said the Queen “remains in good spirits” but will spend the rest of the week resting, The Atlantic Wire notes.

Her brief stay in hospital yesterday was only the monarch’s second in 10 years. Back in 2003, the Queen underwent a minor knee operation while surgeons removed non-cancerous lesions from her face at the same time.

Clearly, it takes more than a stomach bug to keep the Queen of England from her realm.

Are you surprised to see the Queen leave the hospital so quickly?
