Samsung Galaxy S4 Hardware Specs Leaked: Are 1080 Smartphones Overkill?

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has had its full hardware specifications leaked onto the internet.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be launching on March 14 of this year. Earlier rumors indicated that the device may feature a new flexible, highly durable touchscreen technology, which could also serve to lower screen manufacturing costs.

Ubergizmo reports that the new Samsung Galaxy S4 hardware specs are likely credible because the unnamed source also shows images of the Galaxy S4 booting up. An earlier leaked hardware spec sheet showed a different processor, but otherwise the Samsung Galaxy S4 seems to be about the same:

“The Galaxy S4 was previously believed to come with an Exynos 5440 processor clocked at 1.4GHz, a 5-inch Full HD display, Android 4.2 and 2GB of RAM. Today’s possible leak still suggests we could see a 5-inch Full HD device running Android 4.2 which is equipped with 2GB of RAM, but once again, the Galaxy S4?s processor is now believed to be the 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor we heard it would run earlier this month. The Galaxy S4 is also believed to come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants equipped with a 13-megapixel camera and will be offered in either black or white.”

The primary reason for having such a powerful processor would be high definition video decoding playback. Otherwise, in practice the high speed processors of the newest smartphones tend to be almost overkill. Although, it’s possible that with Android-based gaming consoles like the Ouya coming out, we may start to see game apps that push the hardware limits.

Unfortunately, 1080p smartphones may also be a waste of money, although large tablets are a different story. When you look at your smartphone the “apparent” visual clarity is largely determined by size of the screen, the resolution, and the distance between the display and your eyes. Even those with 20/20 vision can’t resolve sharpness above 229 pixels per inch, so even a six inch screen with a 1080 by 1920 resolution has a 367 ppi which is way beyond what is necessary for a smartphone.

Will you be running out to buy a Samsung Galaxy S4 when it comes out? Or do you think the hardware specs are overkill for practical purposes?
