David Bowie Debuts ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’ Co-Stars Tilda Swinton [Video]

David Bowie has debuted a video for a new song titled “The Stars (Are Out Tonight).”

The single is the second cut off Bowie’s upcoming album The Next Day, his first new material in a decade.

Directed by Floria Sigismondi, who was also behind the videos for Bowie’s “Little Wonder” in 1996 and “Dead Man Walking” in 1997, the video stars Oscar Winning actress Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom, We Need To Talk About Kevin).

Sigismondi has previously helmed videos for artists including Muse, The Cure, Katy Perry, The White Stripes, Bjork, Leonard Cohen and Marilyn Manson. She also directed The Runaways, which starred Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, BBC News reports.

In the video, Swinton — who won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2007 for Michael Clayton — plays Bowie ‘s suburban wife and is seen shopping and watching TV, before things take a decidedly androgynous turn.

A statement on Bowie’s website describes the video as:

“[This] story at once captures a twenty first century moment in its convergence of age, gender and the normal/celebrity divide.”

Bowie, who was photographed in New York on Monday features on the latest cover of NME in a metal mask with only his eyes showing, eerily reminiscent of the artwork for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight).”

After 10 years of musical silence, Bowie is coming back with not only a new album, and two new films about his music, but possibly a tour. Band guitarist Gerry Leonard recently revealed Bowie might tour his new album.

“I would say that it’s 50-50,” he told Rolling Stone. “A couple of times, when we played back one of the more kick-ass tunes from the new record, he’d be like, ‘This would be great live!’ Of course, everyone was like, ‘What? Did he just say that?’ But other times he’d just roll his eyes if someone brought up playing live.”

Following a positive response to the release of his comeback single “Where Are We Know?” last month, early reviews of “Stars …” continue that trend.

The Telegraph’s rock and pop critic Neil McCormick writes:

“[It is] teasing us with ideas of Bowie both as an aging recluse and an ageless androgynous rock star,” before adding, “It is the return of the master, showing every other rock and roll star, old or young, how things should be done.”

The Next Day is slated for release on March 11. “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” is now available for purchase digitally.
