‘MADtv’ Alum Anjelah Johnson Joins NBC’s ‘About A Boy’

Former MADtv cast member Anjelah N. Johnson will be co-starring in NBC’s upcoming series, About a Boy.

The series is adapted from the Nick Hornby novel and 2002 film of the same name, which starred Hugh Grant, Nicholas Hoult, and Toni Collette. The series centers on the relationship between a bachelor named Will (David Walton, played by Grant in the film) and the young boy who moves in next door with his single mother, Fiona (Minnie Driver, played by Collette in the film).

According to Deadline, Johnson will play Laurie, the overbearing wife of Will’s best friend and a mother of three who is frustrated with Will’s childish behavior. Johnson previously co-starred in the NBC comedy pilot My Life is an Experiment. The series starred Donald Sutherland and Criminal Minds‘ Paget Brewster and focused on an immersion journalist whose unusual assignments begin to affect his relationship with his wife and two kids.

The TV adaptation of About a Boy is directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1, 2, and 3) and written, produced, and created by Jason Katims (Roswell, Parenthood, Friday Night Lights). NBC ordered a pilot of the series last month, in addition to several other new shows including Girlfriend in a Coma, The Gates, and Joe and Jane.

Anjelah Johnson appeared on the 13th season of MADtv. She is best known for the rude fast food employee Bon Qui Qui, a role which she wrote herself. Her Vietnamese nail salon employee stand-up routine also garnered a lot of attention on YouTube, although it was outshone by her Bon Qui Qui sketch.
