Hostages taken in Wyethville VA Post Office


An armed man is holding five to six people in a post office in Wyethville, Virginia, authorities have reported.

People in a four block radius of the scene have been evacuated, and police say shots have been fired from the post office. The situation began at 2:30pm today, when an armed man in a wheelchair reportedly strapped with explosives took the hostages, three of whom are said to be postal employees. Authorities have confirmed the presence of grenades in the man’s truck.

The man has reportedly not made any demands to authorities yet, but refuses to release the hostages. SWAT teams, Smyth County deputies, Wytheville police, state police, Wythe deputies and the game department are on the scene. No injuries have been reported and the hostage taker has been in contact with police throughout the ordeal via a cell phone. Further details on the man have not been released.
