Teen Wins Abortion Court Battle Against Parents

A Texas teen has won her abortion court battle against her parents, meaning the will be allowed to give birth against her parents’ wishes.

The pregnant teen sued her parents after they allegedly tried to coerce her into getting an abortion. The teen is just 10 weeks pregnant.

Attorneys representing the 16-year-old were granted a long-term injunction by a judge, reports ABC News. The injunction will last for the duration of the unnamed girl’s pregnancy, keeping her parents from forcing an abortion upon her.

The order also requires the girl to use her car for school, work, and medical appointments. Her parents had taken away the teen’s car in an effort to get her to abort the baby, according to court papers.

The girl’s parents will also have to pay half of her hospital bill when she gives birth, unless she marries the baby’s 16-year-old father. The teen initially contacted the Texas Center for Defense of Life for help after her parents tried to make her have an abortion.

Fox News notes that the girl’s boyfriend, Evan Madison, stated of the case:

“Emotionally and stressful it’s been tough. We’ve had fights and arguments over all of this and what will happen next because her parents are very unpredictable.”

The girl’s lawyer, Stephen Casey, stated that the teen was “beside herself” when she first contacted the center. He added:

“These girls are in a bind, particularly in a situation where their parents are forcing them to do something they don’t want to do. Regardless of the [situation], that’s her parents and she should expect support from them in this situation, not resentment and anger.”

The teen alleged in court that her parents took away her phone, her car, took her out of school, and forced her to get two jobs. She said it was an effort to “make her miserable so that she would give into the coercion and have an abortion.”

Do you think parents have the right to force their daughter to get an abortion?
