Mindy McCready: Roger Clemens Addresses Apparent Suicide

Roger Clemens gave a statement about Mindy McCready’s apparent suicide on Monday morning.

In his statement, he said, “I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life … The few times that I had met her and her manager/agent they were extremely nice.”

USA Today reported that, in 2008, Clemens and McCready had a decade-long affair that began when the singer was 15-years-old, a relationship that apparently included trips on Clemens’ private plane and frequent visits to Yankee Stadium to watch Clemens pitch. McCready never refuted the claims and said that she had “known Roger Clemens for a long time.” McCready struggled with mental illness and addiction sporadically throughout her 37-year-long life.

Rusty Hardin, Clemens’ lawyer, described McCready as “a longtime family friend of Roger Clemens and the Clemens family” but made sure to add that “at no time did Roger engage in any kind of inappropriate or improper relationship with her.”

According to E! Online, McCready said that her alleged affair ended because Clemens wouldn’t leave his wife, Debbie. She also apparently said that she had no intentions of marrying the major league baseball star.

“He should have done right by his family—if a person is unhappy in their marriage and spending all their personal time with someone else, you need to do right by your marriage … He should have just told Debbie and been honest with her. If he didn’t want to be with her and wanted to be with me, he should have told her,” McCready is reported to have said.

“I wanted him to, after all that time, do the right thing by me. And, Roger is loyal and dedicated to his family…and so I ended it.”

Clemens denied that the two ever had a sexual relationship and only gave a brief statement which acknowledged that he “made mistakes in [his] personal life for which [he is] sorry.”

McCready had this to say about Debbie Clemens: “I have nothing but remorse and nothing but sympathy for what she’s had to go through with this situation, and she has my utmost apology … I would apologize to her and say I was young. I now know better.”

Mindy McCready was discovered Sunday on the porch of a home in Heber Springs, Arkansas. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
