Kevin Smith Says He Might Release ‘Clerks III’ As A Book

Kevin Smith is still very interested in writing Clerks III. However, he’s just not sure how he wants to present his next project to the masses.

During a recent conversation with the folks at What’s Trending, Smith revealed that he’d like to release Clerks III as a book before making the movie. The filmmaker said he wanted get more involved with who the characters are, something he couldn’t do with the movies.

Smith explained:

“One of the things I talked about was doing it episodically online which would be kind of fun for me, it would be a way of getting away from doing it with a studio. And then I thought about doing it that way but marrying it with something else. I want to do ‘Clerks III’ as a book first.”

The director explained that he would like to explore Randall and Dante during their early years. He added:

“I want to do episodic chapters so that as I release it people can read the whole thing, see what would it look like. I get to go inside the character’s heads, I get to tell Year One origin stories. The first chapter is Dante and Randall meeting in kindergarten and stuff like that. All the stuff that I can’t do in a movie.”

Although Smith is still exploring how to release the project, he said the movie would be the “ultimate Clerks III experience.

During his interview with Good Day LA last year, Smith said he hoped to have the next installment in his beloved franchise in theaters at some point during 2014.

He said:

“I will do ‘Clerks III? and by 2014 is the 20th anniversary we’re going to mark it somehow, God willing, with ‘Clerks III.’ We need Jeff Anderson to come back and say yes.
