‘Houdini Horse’ Goes Viral On YouTube [Video]

Mariska, nicknamed the “Houdini Horse” by her owners, has a special talent that would make the famous magician proud: She’s become a veritable master at lock-picking.

The nine-year-old Friesian mare has taught herself how to unlock almost every door her owners have tried to keep her secured behind. Mariska not only unlocks her own stall doors but those belonging to her neighboring horses as well.

An article by The Huffington Post writes that the lock-picking antics of “Houdini Horse” are gaining online attention. A YouTube video showcasing the beautiful mare’s escapist abilities has picked up more than 700,000 views.

The home movie was uploaded by the Friesian’s owners, Don and Sandy Bonem, of Misty Meadow Farms in Midland, Michigan.

The couple have worked with the rare breed of horses for a decade and, despite their years of experience, are still amazed by Mariska.

According to Michigan Live, Mariska was born at Misty Meadow Farms, and the Bowens have raised her since she was a foal. They say that the mare’s lock-picking talent is completely self taught.

Sandy Bowen commented on how her “Houdini Horse” started mastering the skill:

“She would always play with things with her mouth as a baby, and she just kind of progressed from that. She doesn’t like to be locked in, so she would play with each new lock until she figured it out.”
