Restaurant Fines Customers For Wasting Food
A restaurant in Japan fines its customers if they don’t finish their meals.
According to Discovery News, Hachikyo, a seafood restaurant in Sapporo, fines customers $25 (1,890 yen) if they don’t finish one of the restaurant’s signature dishes.
And when they say finish they mean finish. A disclaimer on the menu says that it is forbidden to leave a single grain of rice in your bowl.
Slideshow reports that the restaurant created the policy out of respect for the fisherman who risk their lives to bring in food.
A Japanese blogger writes:
“According to the explanation in the menu, the working conditions for fishermen are harsh and so dangerous that it’s not unknown for lives to be lost. To show our gratitude and appreciation for the food they provide, it is forbidden to leave even one grain of rice in your bowl. Customers who do not finish their tsukko meshi must give a donation.”
Blogger Midori Yokoyama at Gold Rush writes that anyone who fails to finish an order the tsukko meshi, a bowl of rice topped with salmon roe, are forced to donate $25 to local fisherman. Midori writes that almost everyone finishes the dish.
What do you think of the restaurant’s policy?

I hardly ever finish my food because restaurants serve such HUGE portions. American restaurants need to serve smaller meals, or at least offer smaller meals to those of us who cannot eat 3 meals in one sitting.
