The Detroit Lions need to trade WR Calvin Johnson

This might be considered blasphemy in and around Detroit, Michigan. However an effective argument can be made that the Detroit Lions need to trade away their best offensive weapon, WR Calvin Johnson, in order to secure additional draft picks in next April’s draft. The first part of this argument is Johnson is entering his prime, and after a 48-3 beat down by the Baltimore Ravens the Lions are no where near a place where they can effectively use a talent like this. Johnson’s value to the team is not what he can on the field now, but in the number of draft picks they could get for him to fill other needs.

To continue this argument we have to come to the realization that the Detroit Lions roster is utterly void of NFL caliber talent. They have so many holes, on both sides of the ball, that only several high draft picks are going to net this team enough talent to start a turn around. In essence, the Lions are in a similar position as the Detroit Tigers. They need to make trades that net them prospects for the future, and rid themselves of some very bad contracts. The simple fact here is the Lions are years away from being a competitive NFL team, and they are flushing the career of Johnson down the toilet.

After the end of the 2009 season, and up to draft day Lions General Manger Martin Mayhew needs to go out and find a team willing to give him a fair return, or over pay a little for a talent like Johnson. He needs to net an additional 2010 first round pick, and as many other picks as teams are willing to give up for the star receiver. The Draft is the only way this team will be able to get any better, and right now the Lions only have eight picks in the 2010 draft. They need more, a whole lot more.
