TomTom slashes iPhone app price to a still ridiculous $49

TomTom has reduced the price of its iPhone app from $99 to a more relatively reasonable $49, a price labeled as “introductory” and available until at least December 28th.

$49 is still exorbitant for an iPhone app, and the new, cheaper version lacks Canadian maps. But that’s barely worth mentioning in a list of why the TomTom app is still silly expensive- we could start with the announcement of Google’s free turn-by-turn navigation that sent shares of Garmin, Nuvi and TomTom tumbling back in October. Or the fact that some iPhones require a “car kit” to run the app properly (or at all.) Or the fact that you can get a dedicated GPS unit for around the same amount of money as the original app price or less. (In the six weeks since the Google alternative was introduced, today was the first drop in cost for the pricey app.)

But at least until the end of December, you can snag the TomTom app for a “sale” price of $49. You’d better move quickly- you don’t want to get ripped off.
