Sandra Bullock Plays Against Type In New ‘Minions’ Film

Despicable Me isn’t a franchise that’s willing to die down just yet. Besides the much anticipated sequel Despicable Me 2, it’s just been announced that America’s Sweetheart, Sandra Bullock will be starring in the spin-off called Minions.

In the film Minions, Bullock is set to lend her voice as a super villain, according to Deadline. This is Bullock playing against type seeing as she’s made a career out of playing sweethearts or comedic characters in her slew of romantic comedies. Sandra will voice Scarlet Overkill, who is described by Screen Crush as “a woman with an ambition for world domination.” So far the villain of the franchise has enjoyed success. Jason Segel was he villain in Despicable Me as he lent his voice for Vector.

It is said that Minions, unlike the Despicable Me films, is somewhat of a period piece. Minions takes place in the 60s, where there’s a loss of power in the super villains community. So, a convention takes place and that’s where we meet Bullock’s Scarlet Overkill, who is described as a “Aubrey Hepburn-inspired character bent on becoming he first female super villain and taking over the world.”

As of right now Sandra Bullock is the only one set to star in Minions, but of course that will change. Despicable Me 2 is out in theaters on July 3, 2013, and Minions has an early slate of December 19, 2014 for its release date. In addition to Minions, Bullock has Gravity opposite George Clooney and The Heat.

How’s that for girl power? Are you excited to hear Sandra Bullock in the new Minions film?
