Bubble wrap has saved a Boston construction worker from serious injury or even death.

A spokesman for the Boston Fire Department told WCVB that the worker fell 30 feet off a building but was saved when he landed on a thick pile of bubble wrap.

The 38-year-old man was working at 1959 Commonwealth Ave., a property under construction with scaffolding wrapped in bubble wrap.

Following his fall, the worker was left tangled in the life-saving wrap. After being cut free, it was discovered he had suffered back and shoulder injuries. The unnamed man required hospital treatment, though may have suffered a far worse fate had he not had such a soft landing.

Footage from the scene shows the “bubble wrap” referred to by the BFD spokesman was not the usual poppable material we all know and love but an off-white alternative specifically used to cover scaffolding. Either way, there’s one very relieved worker in the Boston area today.

As The Huffington Post notes, the incident comes just a few days after Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (January 28).

Last week, high school students in New Jersey set a Guinness World Record for the most people simultaneously popping bubble wrap. 336 students from Hawthorne High School came together to burst more than 8,000 square feet of the stuff in just two minutes. The record-breaking event raised money for the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
