Oreo Power Outage Tweet Wins The Super Bowl

Super Bowl XLVII was marred last night when the lights dimmed inside the Super Dome. But for OREO, it was an opportunity for some fantastic free advertising. Within minutes of the power outage in New Orleans Oreo had created a new tag line, designed a new ad, and had it published on Twitter.

The OREO power outage was published at 8:48 PM on Sunday and quickly spread around Twitter. It has now been retweeted 15,000 times and is one of the top trending topics on Yahoo, Google, and Twitter.

OREO’s power outage Tweet was simple but clever and was timed absolutely perfectly. With the Super Bowl delayed, several people turned to Twitter to find out what caused the outage. They didn’t find many answers last night but they did find OREO’s ad.

Sarah Hofstetter, the president of ad agency 360i, told Buzz Feed:

“We had a mission control set up at our office with the brand and 360i, and when the blackout happened, the team looked at it as an opportunity. Because the brand team was there, it was easy to get approvals and get it up in minutes … You need a brave brand to approve content that quickly. When all of the stakeholders come together so quickly, you’ve got magic.”

OREO also ran a TV ad during the Super Bowl but it’s their spur-of-the-moment Twitter ad that really got people talking.

What did you think of OREO’s power outage tweet?

  1. If I hear the term stakeholders one more time, I think I'll puke. Please, let's retire that term this year.

Eh. The Allstate one from Mayhem was much better. "I meant to turn off the scoreboard. Sorry, everybody. Wrong switch."

  8. Brilliant!

  9. Yes you can still dunk in the dark, but who's "Got Milk" during the game. The cookie might land in the beer that you are drinking while watching the game, not the milk you will be having after the game with a meal or at bed time.

  10. STAKEHOLDERS — don't puke in your milk, even Oreos will not taste good that way!
