Emily VanCamp Joins ‘Captain America’ As Love Interest To Chris Evans

Emily VanCamp is joining Captain America, landing the coveted role of the female lead and love interest to Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans).

The 26-year-old Revenge star will be making the jump from the small screen to take on the role in the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Deadline reported. To get the role, Emily VanCamp beat out a strong slate of candidates, including Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay and Community star Alison Brie.

Emily VanCamp joins Captain America as Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). As Coming Soon pointed out, VanCamp’s character was originally supposed to be Peggy’s sister, but her character was retconned so she could be a love interest to Steve Rodgers.

The casting of Emily VanCamp comes as a bit of a surprise to movie industry followers and fans of the Marvel comic book series. When a shortlist of candidates was announced for the part last year, her name was not among the finalists.

Though word of her addition to Captain America didn’t officially come out until the weekend, Emily VanCamp seemed to hint at it on a tweet she sent on Friday, “It’s been an AMAZING week. Thanks for all the twitter love! ;)”

Deadline also released some details about the movie and its sequence: “If you recall, the first film started period and morphed into the present. I’ve heard talk that Scarlett Johansson will bring her Black Widow character to the mix.”

Aside from Emily VanCamp, Captain America will also feature Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson, and Anthony Mackie, The movie is set for release in April 2014.
