Could the little blue pill also be a diet pill?

Viagara, the drug that shows up a lot on TV commercials during football games “for some reason,” might also help coach potatoes lose extra pounds. German researchers suggest that on a preliminary basis the drug can possibly serve as a treatment for obesity, assuming the results of a study with frisky rodents can be extrapolated to humans.

The New York Times has more on the Viagra as a weight-loss drug claim:

“The drug, generically known as sildenafil, helped convert undesirable white fat cells to energy-burning beige fat cells in laboratory mice …

Dr. Alexander Pfeifer of the University of Bonn fed Viagra to mice for seven days and watched what happened:

“… the troublesome white fat cells, which are associated with human problems like the dreaded spare tire, were being converted to the beneficial type of fat cells at a higher rate than usual. Dr. Pfeifer called the results ‘very promising.’ “

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, belly fat tends to consist of white fat cells, and therefore the study suggests that Viagra could potential melt away those stubborn “love” handles.

Dr. Pfeifer cautioned against popping Viagra, which should only be taken under a physician’s supervision, to lose weight, however:

“The idea to have one pill and then obesity goes away, that is a dream, but not easy to come by. What we are up to is basic research in mice. This pill is approved by the F.D.A. for a particular purpose for a reason.”

The Viagra study was published in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
