Teen Bakes A ‘Gayke’ For Parents When She Comes Out As A Lesbian

A 15-year-old girl named Laurel baked an “I’m Gay” cake to announce here coming out to her parents. The teen posted photos of the “Gayke” on her Tumblr page. She wrote a rather light-hearted message to her parents explaining that she is a lesbian, and left it next to the sweet treat.

The teen’s coming out approach went viral after photos and letter details were published on January 27. The young woman used a lot of cake puns during her unique coming out message. An excerpt from the Gayke letter reads:

“Good morning parents,”I’m gay. I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time. I thought doing it this way would be a piece of cake. I hope you still love me. i mean, it’s hard not to love someone who baked you a cake. All my friends know and still love me. Your acceptance would be the icing on the cake. I hope you, much like this cake, are not in tiers. I hope we can look back on this and say “boy, this one really takes the cake. It gets batter.”

Laurel noted in a subsequent Tumblr post that her parents did accept and support her after she came out as a lesbian, according to The Blaze. The teen stated her mom “cried of happiness” and the pair hugged and cried some more together. After all the talking about the coming out announcement was finished, they all ate cake.

The I’m Gay cake-maker states in her Tumblr “About” section that she created the page as an Ellen DeGeneres fan project. She also notes that she now frequently gives LGBT advice and cake.
