‘Doctor Strange’ Currently In The Works At Marvel

A Marvel executive has stated that Doctor Strange is one of the movies currently planned for the next set of films produced by Marvel Studios.

Although a Doctor Strange movie has been rumored for years, it seems the studio is finally ready to commit to a big screen adaptation. According to Cinema Blend, Marvel President Kevin Feige said the film is “definitely one” of the movies being tossed around by executives.

Feige explained to MTV News:

“He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have. He’s totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before … which keeps us excited.”

Marvel’s Phase Three will also include Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man. Both film will arrive in theaters after The Avengers 2.

Yahoo! Movies describes the character as follows:

“Stephen Strange was a neurosurgeon whose career comes to an abrupt end after his hands are damaged in a car accident. After tracking down a Himalayan hermit known as the Ancient One, Strange is taught the mystical arts and reinvents himself as Doctor Strange, the ‘mightiest magician in the cosmos.’ “

Although Marvel is currently planning a Doctor Strange movie for release in 2016, this isn’t the first time someone has attempted to bring the character to life. Co-writer and director Philip DeGuere tackled the story of Stephen Strange in the 1978 made-for-TV movie Dr. Strange. The film featured The Inglorious Bastards star Peter Hooten in the lead role.

According to Internet Movie Database, the 1992 Full Moon Entertainment flick Doctor Mordrid started out as an adaptation of Doctor Strange. Producers were reportedly forced to rewrite the script when rights to the character were lost.

An animated film featuring the character was produced in 2007. The trailer for the movie has been included below.
