Shannon Miller Pregnant, Olympian Expecting Baby After Cancer Recovery

Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller is pregnant, the athlete has announced, expecting her second child after undergoing surgery to treat ovarian cancer.

Shannon Miller announced she is pregnant for the second time on her website. The announcement of Miller’s pregnancy describes how the gymnast was diagnosed with and treated for a rare form of ovarian cancer, and that despite losing an ovary, the 35-year-old is pregnant again:

” … seven-time Olympic medal gymnast, cancer survivor, and President of Shannon Miller Lifestyle, Shannon Miller, has announced she is expecting a miracle baby! This comes just two years after Miller was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer … After surgery to remove her left ovary and the malignant tumor, Miller received nine weeks of aggressive chemotherapy to give her the best chance of survival and non-reoccurrence.”

In the statement announcing her pregnancy, Miller explains that in 2011, she and her husband had been planning a second child — but that the decision was halted by her diagnosis. She says:

“Things were going fantastic with the launch of my company, Shannon Miller Lifestyle, my foundation was growing and we hoped our family would expand as well. Then my world stopped. Instead of calling my parents to tell them they had another grandchild on the way, I was calling to tell them I may have cancer. Our baby plans were put on hold indefinitely … I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to do some amazing things in my life, but being a mom is second to none.”

Shannon Miller’s statement confirming she is pregnant comes two years and one day after the date of her surgery to remove the germ cell tumor, a form of ovarian cancer. The gymnast says she plans to blog about pregnancy and many of the related issues as she waits for her second baby to arrive.
