Ahead of the Sunday night Girls season premiere discussion once again turned to star/showrunner Lena Dunham and her “fat naked” body and “little boobs.”
Radio shock jock Howard Stern started the debate over Dunham’s character Hannah when he said she was “a little fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill and she keeps taking her clothes off and it kind of feels like rape … I don’t want to see that.”
It wasn’t just Howard Stern chiming in, follow suit was NY Post critic Linda Stasi who called Dunham “a woman with giant thighs, a sloppy backside and small breasts … compelled to show it all.”
So what does the real-life Dunham think of all the negative attention? Speaking to David Letterman, she laughed off the criticism of her body:
“It put me in the best mood! I just want to be like, my gravestone says, ‘She was a little fat chick and she got it going.’ “
In fact, Dunham has never been apologetic for her character’s body type. In season one, she went for a jog and followed it up with cupcakes and ice cream cones. While Dunham says the body discussion is off the table for season 2, she still uses her larger female figure to progress the plot.
Nudity and shock and awe tactics on pay-to-watch networks is nothing new; however, the Lena Dunham nudity discussion rages on, perhaps because for the first time on television a “fat girl” with “small breasts” is willing to showcase her body in a way she doesn’t find exploitative or perhaps because many critics see it as just that, a chance to exploit a “fat chick” for the curiosity that brings with it increased ratings.
