Katherine Webb: No Problem With Brent Musburger’s Remarks

Katherine Webb doesn’t see the big deal about Brent Musburger’s comments.

The ESPN commentator got in some trouble for comments he made about Webb, the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron. When the network’s cameras found Webb in the stands during Alabama’s win in the BCS Title game, Murburger remarked on her good looks and how McCarron was a lucky man.

“You quarterbacks, you get all the good looking women,” Musburger said, referring to Webb. “What a beautiful woman.”

Musburger took some heat for the comments, even leading to ESPN issuing an apology. But Webb’s parents spoke out, telling FOX 5 Atlanta that Murburger’s comments may have come out wrong but weren’t intended in a bad way

Then Katherine Webb herself weighed in during an appearance on NBC’s Today show, telling Matt Lauer that she thinks Musburger is being treated too harshly.

“I think the media has been really unfair to him,” Webb said. “If he would have said something along the line of that we were hot or sexy or made any derogatory statements like that, I think that would have been a little bit different. The fact that he said we were beautiful and gorgeous, I don’t see why any woman wouldn’t be flattered by that.”

Katherine Webb also noted that the apology wasn’t necessary. Yahoo! Sports praised Webb for her handling of situation, and seconded her sentiment that Musburger was not out of line:

“We tend to agree. The same network that apologized for Musburger’s comments made the decision to show Webb repeatedly during the broadcast. That doesn’t quite add up.

“Webb has handled her newfound fame (she went from a few thousand Twitter followers to a little more than 228,000 as of Wednesday morning) pretty well. She also seems to realize that there’s something a little odd about her being the center of attention after her boyfriend and Alabama actually, you know, won a national championship. She talked about how Alabama’s football players need to be the ones getting the attention.”

But despite her appearance on Today and her newfound Twitter popularity, Katherine Webb said she doesn’t deserve the attention — her boyfriend and the rest of his Alabama teammates do.
