Study Links BPA to Male Reproductive Dysfunction

Seattle, WA (AHN) – Researchers in China and the United States have linked a chemical found in common household item like baby bottles to sexual dysfunction in male factory workers who make these products.
The five-year study funded by Kaiser Permanente examined 634 factory workers in China who were exposed to high levels of Bisphenol-A, or BPA. These men were compared to a control group who worked in factories where BPA was not present.
The researchers said in a statement that the workers in the BPA factories had quadruple the risk of erectile dysfunction and seven times more risk of ejaculation difficulty than the control group.
According to a Kaiser Permanente statement, this was the first study using humans to examine BPA’s effect on the male reproductive system. Previous studies using rats and mice had suggested BPA caused sexual problems in men.
The study is published in the journal Human Reproduction.
