‘Pacific Rim’ Gets A Shiny New CES Trailer [Video]

Those attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week got a chance to see an exclusive new trailer for director Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.

The acclaimed filmmaker has described his upcoming feature as a kind of love song to the monster movies of days past. The movie also appears to pull from Lovecraftian lore as well as Japanese kaiju, though none of these creatures make an appearance in the clip you see below.

The clip you see below, which was uploaded to YouTube by the good folks at Joblo, isn’t overly different from the trailer released last year. However, there are a few new pieces of footage tucked into the trailer. What’s more, you can clearly hear GlaDOS from Portal directing the giant robots at one point.

The film’s plot synopsis reads as follows:

“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.

“But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”

Although the film has yet to reach theaters, Comic Book Movie is reporting that Guillermo del Toro is already putting together a sequel for the film. If this thing completely tanks at the box office, all of that preparation may have been for nothing.

You can catch the CES 2013 trailer below.

Pacific Rim, which stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Rinko Kikuchi, opens in US theaters on July 12.
