Des Moines, Iowa (AHN) – A house cat in Iowa has been confirmed to have contracted the swine flu, or H1N1 virus.

The cat’s owners reported that it was sneezing and not eating. The cat was taken to the Iowa State University veterinary college, where tests were conducted that confirmed it had H1N1, according to the Des Moines Register. Two people living in the house had the flu before the cat exhibited any symptoms.

Dr. Ann Garvey, Iowa’s public health veterinarian, told the newspaper that it is unlikely there will be many more cases where pets get the disease from their owners, or where humans catch the flu from their pets.

The cat, an unidentified 13-year-old, and its owners, have recovered from their illnesses.
