Netflix Is Reportedly Down Again: New Year’s Eve Outage


Netflix is down again according to various reports.

Once again, bad timing for the media company after the Christmas Eve streaming service interruption. In fact, New Year’s Eve is probably a more undesirable time for customers to lose access to movies and TV shows.

At the moment it is unclear how widespread the issue is, and whether it affects streaming or DVD ordering, or both, and/or what devices. During the Christmas Eve outage, streaming to computers and tablets appeared to be unaffected, but instant streaming to television went down.

TechCrunch offered the following information on the apparent New Year’s Eve Netflix outage:

“Following its lengthy Christmas Eve outage, Netflix’s service has again gone down today, according to a message posted on the Netflix website, dozens of reports from users on Twitter, and other third-party website monitoring services. Netflix’s official accounts have not yet been updated with any details about today’s issues, which have been underway all morning long.”

As this writer’s location, Netflix streaming appears to functioning normally both to a flat-screen TV and a laptop, however. There are tweets to the @Netflixhelps that seem to indicate that some subscribers are experiencing difficulties.

Update from Netflix via TechCrunch:

“We are experiencing some technical difficulty with the Netflix DVD Web site, which as a result may not be available for all members. Our engineers are working to address this issue. Netflix streaming is not impacted.”

Separately, Amazon Web Services today issued an explanation and apology for the Christmas Eve Netflix outage.
