FDA Warns P&G on Cold Medicines Containing Vitamin C

Washington, DC (AHN) – The Food and Drug Administration told the maker of two popular over-the-counter cold and flu medications that it could not sell products marketed as both drugs and dietary supplements.
At issue is Procter & Gamble’s Vicks Dayquil Plus Vitamin C and Vicks Nyquil Plus Vitamin C. The FDA said in a statement that it had not given the Cincinnati-based company approval to sell the drugs with vitamin C because the combination has not “been proven safe and effective.”
The FDA also said in the statement that there is not enough information to support the claim that vitamin C is safe and effective in treating the common cold.
The FDA said that Procter and Gamble was “illegally” marketing the Vicks products as “combinations of drug ingredients and a dietary ingredient.”
The FDA has sent similar warning letters to drug companies in 2001 and 2008.
