Serena Williams Defeats Venus For WTA Championship
Doha, Qatar (AHN) – Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus to win the WTA Championship title Sunday.
She defeated her older sister 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the final. It was her 13th victory in 23 matches against Venus, and her second year-end title.
Williams is on top of the world.
She finished with a No. 1 World ranking to push Dinara Safina, of Russia out of the spot by winning two major titles this year. Williams recaptured the top ranking after the Sony Ericsson Championships.
“2009 has been a truly memorable season for me during which I enjoyed some of the biggest wins of my career,” said Serena Williams, who won her second year-end title, her 35th in her career.
One thing that Williams could not hold was her tongue this season.
In late September during the U.S. Open, against Kim Clijsters, Williams gave the linewoman a lashing. Williams was penalized for a foot fault that gave Clijsters the semifinal victory, 6-4, 7-5.
Williams was serving at 15-30 in the 12th game of the second set when it was called.
Williams smashed her racquet and received another code violation that resulted in a loss of a point following her comments to the judge.
“I’m going to shove this [deleted] ball down your [deleted] throat,” Williams screamed.
And with much banter, the video was constantly viewed on YouTube.
Regardless, the fiery player has amassed a remarkable season, winning two Grand Slam singles titles in the Australian Open and in Wimbledon.
“Capturing the year-end World No.1 ranking is a huge accomplishment for me and I am thrilled that all the hard work has paid off,” Williams said.
