Israeli Premier Agreeable To Processing Iran’s Uranium In Russia

Benjamin Netanyahu

Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) – Israeli Prime Minister c on Friday praised a United Nations-drafted and U.S.0backed deal that ships most of Iran’s enriched uranium to Russia for processing.

Netanyahu described the deal as a “positive first-step” in preventing Iran from making nuclear weapons. He made the statement during a meeting with George J. Mitchell, the U.S. envoy to the Middle East, in Jerusalem.

The leader’s view contradicts that of his defense minister, Ehud Barak, who told a radio program that the deal recognizes Iran’s uranium enrichment program. Israel’s former intelligence chief, Danny Yatom, said the deal allows Iran to continue enriching nuclear material.

Meanwhile, an Iranian lawmaker, Kazem Jalali, said the deal does not guarantee the return to Iran of the low-enriched uranium to fuel a nuclear reactor. The reactor will produce radioisotopes for cancer treatment.
