Capital Steez Of Pro Era Dies At 19

Rapper Capital Steez has died at the age of 19.

Steez was a member of the Brooklyn rap collective Pro Era. Two of his group members, Joey Bada$$ and Chuck Strangers, tweeted about Steez’s passing early Monday morning.

Joey Bada$$ tweeted, “RIP CAPITAL STEEZ!!! 7.7.93 – 12.24.12.”

He also wrote, “This unfortunate xmas eve.. Lost a best friend, a brother, a pro, a partner. Letting go is never easy.. May ur soul rest in peace Jamal..”

Chuck Strangers wrote, “Rest in Peace to my homie Steez I love you bro.” An hour later he wrote, “Now I’m just missing you.”

Capital Steez was born Jamal Dewar. While there aren’t very details about his death yet, at 11:59 pm he tweeted, “The end.” With that information, the cause of death appears to be a suicide, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The group’s Facebook page was flooded with condolences from fans. One person wrote:

“Rest in Paradise STEEZ. Your contributions to hip hop are more than appreciated because talent like yours is rare. I say ‘is’ because for as long as I live, I will be conscious about how Proera, brought back real hip hop in the BeastCoast.

#LongLiveCap.”

Another wrote:

“I can’t believe Capital STEEZ is dead.

Pro Era is all I’ve been listening to recently, it looked like Bada$$ STEEZ were going to the next great partnership in Hip Hop. Some of the most exciting music to come from our generation. The next generation even, he was born in 93!?

:(“

Several memorial pages had also popped up in the hours since news of his death broke.

Pro Era had recently released a mixtape called Peep: The aPROcalypse.

We will update this story once more details become available. It’s never easy to lose a loved one, especially during the holidays, and so we extend our condolences to Dewar’s friends and families during this difficult time.
