Attempt to Legalize Medical Marijuana Fails in New Hampshire

Concord, NH (AHN) – An attempt to override the New Hampshire governor’s veto of a bill that would legalize medical marijuana failed by a slim margin in that state’s Legislature on Wednesday.

The state Senate did vote 14-10 in favor of overriding Gov. John Lynch’s July 9 decision, but a two-thirds majority is needed to trump a veto, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported. The measure needed 16 votes.

The House was successful in its override effort, with a 240-115 vote.

The bill would make it legal for people suffering from debilitating illnesses to buy marijuana at one of three designated centers in the state. But opponents said the definition of a debilitating medical condition was not spelled out in the bill, according to the Union Leader.
