Tom Cruise Film Struggles With ‘The Hobbit’

This hobbit isn’t giving in. “The Hobbit” is a box-office success that Tom Cruise’s “Jack Reacher” is having trouble competing with.

Tom Cruise and a popular action novel series combined can’t topple the success of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic, which the fans have been waiting for since “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King”. That is one powerful ring indeed.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” took the top spot with earnings of $37.6 million according to Hollywood.com.

“The Hobbit” has brought in $148.9 million in ten days and proves to be a top performer for Warner Bros..

This isn’t saying that “Jack Reacher” was a flop. Quite the opposite, as it has raked in $15.6 million and placed second at the box office, an impressive feat that no doubt Tom Cruise had a lot to do with. Face it; audiences love Tom Cruise.

The premier for “Jack Reacher” had been postponed due to the Connecticut shooting, but the film is doing well in spite of a possible backlash against violent movies.

I’m betting the government and the NRA focusing on video games had a lot to do with the lack of protest on the film front.

Judd Apatow’s “This Is 40” came in third at $12 million, making it the most successful comedy in spite of less than spectacular results.

Fourth was “Rise of The Guardians”, the animated movie released to much critical acclaim, beating Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln”, says USA Today.

The final figures are due Monday, with this year earning six percent more than 2011.
