Phillies Complete-Lee Club Yanks; Take 1-0 World Series Lead

New York, NY (AHN) – Cliff Lee pitched a one-run complete game and Chase Utley homered twice to help the Philadelphia Phillies take a 1-0 lead in the World Series with a 6-1 win over the New York Yankees Wednesday night.

Lee was dominating from the start, painting the corners with his fastball and using his changeup and curveball to get batters out.

The 31-year old lefty struck out 10 and walked none to help the Phillies improve to 17-4 in their last 21 postseason games, the best record over that span in MLB history.

“Working ahead, switching speeds and staying away from the heart of the plate”” said Lee when asked how he was successful against the hard-hitting Yankee lineup.

Utley gave Lee early run support, knocking solo shots of Yanks ace CC Sabathia in the third and sixth innings.

Sabathia, coming off an MVP performance in the ALCS, gave up two runs in his six innings. The usually trusty Yanks bullpen gave up four in the remaining three innings.

Raul Ibanez knocked in two runs, while Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard had an RBI each in the later innings.

The Yanks scored their only run on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Mark Teixeira in the ninth.

The World Series continues with Game Two in the Bronx Thursday.
