Miami, FL (AHN) – Parents should be aware this Halloween that some of the face paints their children my don for costumes could contain toxic metals.

The environmental coalition group, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, said in a recent report that some costume face paint contains lead, nickel, cobalt and chromium. The report claims that in several instances, the metals were not listed on the products’ ingredients labels.

Some packages even had misleading claims like “hypoallergenic” and “FDA compliant,” according to the report, “Pretty Scary.”

The group recommends parents choose costumes for their children that do not require face paints or masks, which the report also says may contain toxic chemicals. The group also says that parents can make their own face paint with food ingredients. If parents do allow their children to use face paint, the report urges them to keep it away from their kids’ mouths.
