Washington, D.C. (AHN) – The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) denied Monday that it sent e-mails asking consumers to download a program from its Web site and check their deposit insurance coverage.

FDIC spokesman Greg Hernandez warned those who received the e-mail, which has the subject line “check your Bank Deposit Insurance Coverage,” not to open the link because it is a phishing scam.

“These e-mails are not being sent by the FDIC. This appears to be a phishing scam,” Hernandez said in an e-mail to AHN Media Corp., which also received the same e-mail.

“Recipients should consider the intent of this e-mail as an attempt to collect personal or confidential information, some of which may be used to gain unauthorized access to on-line banking services or to conduct identity theft,” Hernandez added.
