Dothan, AL – Fifty-five-year-old Glendell Ruth Hasan has been charged with terroristic threatening, a class C felony. She could face 10 years in a state penitentiary, which could include hard labor, and incur a fine up to $15,000. Allegedly Hasan made an indelicate remark while dropping off her son at the Jerry Lee Faine Elementary School in Dothan, AL. She was overheard saying, “They can shoot up this whole school as far as I care,” according to AL.com. Thereafter, staff members in the school refused to allow her entry, and put the school into lock down.

The Dothan Eagle reported the response of Dothan City School Superintendent Tim Wilder to the incident:

“She got into a confrontation with an employee at the school and made reference to a shooting at the school, which caused police to respond and lock down the school.”

Given the nature of her statement, and the events that have recently transpired at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, any inferences, even in jest, considered threatening against schools are going to be taken especially serious. Sandy Hook Elementary is the site where 20 children and six school staffers were killed by a lone gunman, Adam Lanza, on December 14, 2012. The Huffington Post reports that today, funeral services are scheduled for victims Charlotte Bacon, Daniel Barden, Caroline Previdi, Victoria Soto, and Chase Kowalski. Visitation is also underway for Sandy Hook Elementary School principal Dawn Hochsprung.

As for Hasan, neither she nor her attorney, have made any official statements regarding the terroristic threatening charges.
