Detroit, MI – Santa was spotted today in Detroit, Michigan handing out cash to unsuspecting shoppers. In a very generous random act of kindness, the secret Santa couple brightened the day for dozens of strangers as they handed out $100 bills.
According to The Detroit Free Press, the couple, who wish to remain anonymous, stated that the gifting has become an annual tradition. For the past four years the couple, who are former residents of Detroit, have returned to the area to hand out between $10,000 and $15,000 cash. The secret Santas, escorted by The Lincoln Park Police Department, spent most of the day Tuesday spreading cheer. The couple says that they were both raised in middle-class families but have been blessed financially, and they want to share it with others. One of the two secret Santas (the wife) further explained their generosity:
“My philosophy is the more we earn, the more we can give away; we feel very blessed. We just don’t want it to be about us. That’s why we don’t even tell our kids. It could be opening the door for somebody – whatever they need. There’s a Secret Santa in every one of us, and it has nothing to do with your economic ability to give. You never know how you’re going to touch someone’s life with a random act of kindness. That’s our message.”
The secret Santa couple in Michigan are actually part of an entire society of secret Santas. The Secret Society of Santas have come together to spread cheer and generosity during the holiday season, which can be a financial burden to many. The society asks that each of its Santas commit to donating at least $10,000 during the holiday season, usually in $100 bills. The Santas are never to reveal their identity and must not claim the donations as tax deductions. The Secret Society of Santas explain their mission on their website:
“The compassion shared from one spontaneous random act of kindness is elevating, priceless and not easily explained. It is an instant connection between souls that can change a life forever. This is the experience of being a Secret Santa. Being a Secret Santa has blessings beyond words.”
