The first finishers in the Marine Corps Marathon 2009, also known as “The People’s Marathon” are beginning to cross the finish line. The 26.2 mile race began at 8:02am on Sunday at the National Mall.

The race follows a route that puts it in direct contact with the best sights of Arlington, VA. including a pass by the Nation’s capital.

The 34th Marine Corp Marathon is hosting over 22,000 runners, making it the fifth largest marathon in the U.S. and the ninth largest in the world. It’s also the largest marathon in the world to not offer any type of prize money.
