Commentary | James Dobson is the latest conservative Christian to link the Sandy Hook school shooting to a lack of God in our nation. Mike Huckabee already made a comment similar to Dobson’s when he attributed the mass shooting to a lack of God in schools, but Dobson added to those remarks during a radio broadcast on Monday morning.

Dobson, the founder of Christian group Focus on the Family, stated, per The Huffington Post:

“Our country really does seem in complete disarray. I’m not talking politically, I’m not talking about the result of the November sixth election; I am saying that something has gone wrong in America and that we have turned our back on God.

“I mean millions of people have decided that God doesn’t exist, or he’s irrelevant to me and we have killed fifty-four million babies and the institution of marriage is right on the verge of a complete redefinition. Believe me, that is going to have consequences too.

“And a lot of these things are happening around us, and somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now, but I am going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the Scripture and on God Almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what’s going on.”

While James Dobson doesn’t blame gay marriage and abortion outright for causing the Sandy Hook school shooting, he does very strongly connect the shooting to a lack of God and God’s decision to allow “judgement to fall upon us.” It is difficult to come to that conclusion, when there have been several other mass shootings through the years, despite millions of people believing in God.

Brian Fischer is another conservative Christian who, like Dobson and Huckabee, has taken the tragedy that happened in Newtown, Connecticut and turned it into a way to blame people for not believing in God. Unfortunately, the rhetoric is eerily similar to the Westboro Baptist Church, though the so-called church is making their beliefs known on signs like, “God hates fags,” and saying on their Twitter accounts that God sent the Connecticut shooter.

While if may not seem fair to link James Dobson, Brian Fischer, and Mike Huckabee to the controversial Westboro Baptist Church, consider that all of these people are either claiming that the shooting happened after we took God out of school, the nation turned its back on God, or because God sent the shooter. These statements are essentially the same point.

People have taken to Twitter after hearing James Dobson’s latest radio address, which was dedicated to the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. For the most part Twitter users were upset with James Dobson’s view, saying:

James Dobson just pulled a Westboro Baptist Church. Gay people abortions, apparently, caused the Sandy Hooks shooting.
