Johnny Depp To Play Supercomputer In New Christopher Nolan Film

Johnny Depp is starring in yet another unconventional movie role.

More previously confidential plot details have emerged about the Christopher Nolan executive-produced film Transcendence starring Johnny Depp.

According to The Wrap, in the science fiction/futuristic opus, “Johnny Depp will play a scientist whose brain is uploaded into a supercomputer in the highly anticipated film.” The movie is being made by Batman director Nolan along with other members of his Inception team. The Oscar-winning Inception cinematographer Wally Pfister will direct Transcendence which was written Jack Paglen. Depp will reportedly receive $20 million for his role in Transcendence.

The Wrap obtained confirmation of some of the Transcendence details from executive producer Andrew Kosove:

” ‘It is true Johnny Depp’s brain is uploaded into a computer.’

“Kosove also confirmed that singularity, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence are important to the script.”

BetaBeat has more information about Transcendence:

“Johnny Depp may seem like a strange casting choice, but given his penchant for bizarre roles, we imagine he’ll play a mad scientist quite convincingly. He’ll be playing the main character, Will, who is assassinated by terrorists who are against technology. When his wife uploads his brain, Will begins to respond to her queries through the computer. By hooking his brain-cum-computer up to the Internet, he can continue his scientific research.”

Casting for the wife and other key roles has not yet been finalized. Pfister has reportedly met with Noomi Rapace, Tobey Maguire, James McAvoy, and Oscar-winner Christof Waltz about joining the production, although indications are that Rapace is no longer in the running.

Are you looking forward to seeing Transcendence, especially given its Batman/Inception pedigree?
