The trailer for director Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming sci-fi flick Pacific Rim has landed online. The ensuing buzz is sure to be deafening.
According to Screen Rant, Clash of the Titans scribe Travis Beacham handled scripting duties on the flick. The story chronicles humanity’s efforts to stop a motley crew of enormous monsters from destroying the planet.
The official synopsis reads as follows:
“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.
“But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”
that del Toro is already putting together ideas for a possible sequel should his upcoming effort become a hit at the box office. Of course, it might be a while before he gets around to it.
“We certainly started tossing ideas for possibilities of a sequel and Travis Beacham and I are writing a proposal of ideas, but at the same time I know I don’t want to do that next,” the director explained. “I want to do something else, I want to do something in a different genre that’s not so big.”
Those of us have spent a large portion of our lives reading the works of H.P. Lovecraft will surely get a thrill out of the embedded trailer. While the “enormous creatures rising from the depths of the ocean” angle is nothing new, del Toro’s effort seems much more Lovecraftian than most.
Pacific Rim, which stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Rinko Kikuchi, is set to open in theaters on July 12, 2013. The latest trailer for this highly-anticipated creature feature lies below.
