A high school teacher, Ekatherine Pappas, 25, was sentenced to three years in prison on Monday for skipping school to film herself having sex with a male student, NY Post reports.
Maryland police began investigating Pappas, a Spanish teacher at Franklin High School in Reisterstown, in January of this year after a staff member contacted the Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit when a video depicting the teacher and a 16-year-old student engaging in sexual activity began circulating the school.
School officials say Pappas is a graduate of Loyola University and had been a teacher at Franklin High for a month. She reportedly fled to Columbia after learning there was a warrant for her arrest after having sex with a student. That same day, police officials interviewed the victim, whose name has not been released, and he stated that Pappas asked him to skip school on two occasions in December 2016. The teen said he engaged in sexual intercourse with his teacher several times, but the encounter was filmed once.
Police say that the teacher filmed herself having sex with a Franklin High School student at his home.
After learning about the Maryland teacher’s sexual encounter with a student, the victim’s father released a statement to the court. He said that the incident has affected his family in “devastating and profound ways.” He now says that his home is “no longer a safe environment.”
The victims’ father went on to describe the terror he felt after learning that a Franklin High School teacher sexually abused his son and filmed it for the entire school to see.
He added that the ordeal has been confusing for the teen and as a result, he will not allow his son to return to Franklin High School.
When police learned that the teacher was returning to the United States a week later, deputies waited for Pappas at the Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC and made an arrest.
The teacher was charged with three counts of fourth-degree sex offense. Prosecutor Perry Wasserman stated that she pled guilty to the charges last month in the Baltimore County Circuit Court.
A Baltimore judge sentenced the teacher to three years in prison following five years of enhanced probation. When Pappas is released from prison, she will have to register as a sex offender for 15 years.
